This light touch analysis has considered the case file of the Report Harmful Content service from April 2021 to November 2022. During this period the service has dealt with 2,195 inquiries and has escalated around 33% of these to other services. However, in 87% of cases Report Harmful Content were able to encourage industry to successfully take action.

In June 2021 Ofsted concluded that the prevalence of child-on-child sexual harassment and abuse was so widespread that, for some, incidents are ‘so commonplace that they see no point in reporting them’ and ‘consider them normal’. SWGfL and The Marie Collins Foundation has created a support service for professionals working with children and young people in tackling harmful sexual behaviours, funded by the Home Office and in collaboration with the Department for Education.

It’s clear that from the reports that have been received on the Professionals Online Safety Helpline, professionals are still trying to address the problem with many feeling considerable distress and uncertainty of how to effectively handle the problem.
