A teenage girl from Glasgow has taken her own life after being subjected to sickening attacks of online bullying.

16-year-old Britney Mazzoncini took to social media to express her anguish in the days leading up to her death.

She was rushed to hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning but could not be saved.

While there is greater interest than ever before in online privacy there are also calls from some quarters for people who use the web to be fully accountable. This is part of the thinking behind Facebook's real names policy, and it's also what's driven Tim Berners-Lee -- no less than the inventor of the web -- to call for the identities of cyberbullies to be exposed.

Google Ideas is a think tank specifically dedicated to supporting free expression while fighting harassment. Google posted a picture of the mena dn women working on the project and there followed racist, sexist, hate filled replies via Twitter.

Whilst we cannot guarantee removal of all images online, our exceptional partnerships with internet industry partners allows us to minimise the reach, and some of the harm caused by revenge porn.'

There are times when we may feel the world is full of antisocial people who feed upon the hatred and distress they share and cause. As a teacher, with a responsibility for the safeguarding and well being of the children in your care, cyberbullying will almost certainly be, at best, a low level distraction and at worst, lead to self harm, and the involvement of social services and law enforcement.

As part of an experiment, a man asks for help translating a Facebook message he has received.

There's a man in Lithuania who speaks only English. The message is in Lithuanian. He can't read it, so he asks some locals to translate it for him.
